Exploring the Three-Dimensional Relief Art in Temples and Shrines

Stone carving is a traditional folk craft in Fujian with a history of over a thousand years.

Relief art involves carving various three-dimensional images on the surface of stone, making the images protrude from the surface, hence the term "relief."

The charm of relief artworks varies with different materials. In religious temples and rural ancestral halls, the use of relief is quite common. It is typical for the walls on either side of temple buildings to feature relief art, which depicts the architectural form of the temple, cultural thoughts, and various historical and mythological stories. This allows visitors to the temples and shrines to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and religious context.
